Chemical Peels

A chemical solution that causes the top layers of skin to exfoliate and peel, to reveal the smoother, more youthful skin beneath

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a popular cosmetic treatment designed to rejuvenate and improve the skin's appearance by applying a chemical solution that causes the top layers of skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. This process reveals the smoother, more youthful-looking skin beneath. Chemical peels can vary in intensity—from light, which offers gentle exfoliation and quick recovery times, to deep peels that target more significant skin issues but require a longer healing period. They are used to address a variety of skin concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone, making them a versatile option for those seeking to enhance their skin's health and appearance.

What is Lumecca IPL?

Lumecca is the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) on the market used to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. After use, patients notice significant improvements in the complexion, and clarity of the skin. Lumecca operates using photo-thermolysis, which provides a photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable light treatment. Because the light therapy is so precise, healthy surrounding tissue is not affected or damaged during the process. The treatment requires zero downtime and is especially effective for improving the appearance of the face, neck, chest, and hands.

What are the benefits of Lumecca?
Lumecca is excellent for treating a range of discoloration concerns, including: age spots, freckles, spider veins (telangiectasia), and rosacea. It can also improve overall skin texture. Lumecca can be used on all areas of the body.  Most common areas used are the face, neck, chest, arms, legs, and hands. Lumecca can be used on a range of skin tones and types, including darker skin. Whether the skin is uneven due to photo damage or superficial veins, Lumecca can improve the appearance of the skin in a single session.

How does Lumecca work?
The Intense Pulsed Light heats the dermis and pulls pigment (brown spots) to the surface of your skin. The spots will darken and appear look like fine coffee grounds. This pigment either absorbs into the body or flakes off in the days following the treatment. Intense Pulsed Light treatments also stimulates the skin’s collagen filling in the space around your pores. Often clients ask about “enlarged pores.” Pores do not actually become larger. They only look larger due to collage breaking down as we age. When collagen is stimulated the pores appear to shrink.

During treatment, a beam of light is directed to the treatment area. Patients typically report no discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment, the skin will feel warm and appear reddish for 30-60 minutes, after which the skin returns to normal.

What to Expect After Treatment
Immediately following the treatment, you’ll see your brown spots darken. You’ll probably realize that there was more uneven pigmentation than you realized. This is a sign that the treatment is working! Over the next few days the spots will be absorbed by the body or flake off leaving revitalized skin behind revealing a more even complexion. If superficial blood vessels are being treated, they will typically begin to disappear over the course of a couple weeks. To increase the success of the Lumecca Treatment, sunlight should be avoided before and immediately after treatment; sun protection should be used to maintain results.

You can also expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some very minor swelling. This usually lasts 2-24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.

How many treatments will you need?
Results will be seen in just 1 session but most people will get optimal results from 3-5 sessions placed 3-4 weeks apart, depending on your skin type.

Typical Downtime

The typical downtime associated with chemical peels can vary widely, depending on the specific type of peel used. For lighter peels, patients may experience mild flaking and minimal redness, allowing for a quick return to daily activities almost immediately. In contrast, deeper peels may result in more intense peeling and require a longer recovery period, during which the skin rejuvenates and heals. This range from mild flaking to significant peeling reflects the tailored approach of chemical peels to meet diverse skin needs and goals, emphasizing the importance of consulting with a professional to choose the right peel for your skin type and desired outcomes.

Time Frame Post-Treatment Reactions and Care
Immediate Post treatment Immediately following a chemical peel, your skin may appear red and feel tight or sensitive, similar to a sunburn. The intensity of these effects largely depends on the strength of the peel. Lighter peels might result in slight redness and tightness, while deeper peels can cause more pronounced redness and a sensation of discomfort. It's crucial to avoid any direct sun exposure and to follow your practitioner's aftercare instructions closely to support the healing process.
First 24 to 72 Hours In the initial days following a chemical peel, the onset of peeling or flaking is common, particularly with medium to deep peels, as the skin begins the process of shedding its older layers. This can leave the skin feeling dry and tight but is a natural part of the rejuvenation process, revealing newer, softer skin underneath. The most crucial step during this period is to diligently apply and reapply sunscreen to protect the vulnerable new skin from sun damage. The extent of peeling varies with the peel's strength—lighter peels may cause mild flaking, whereas deeper peels can lead to more pronounced peeling.
One Week After By this time, the peeling process for lighter chemical peels should be complete, revealing fresher, brighter skin underneath. For deeper peels, some peeling may still occur, but the most intense shedding should have subsided. The skin may still be sensitive, so sun protection remains crucial. It's also important to maintain a gentle skincare routine to nurture the new skin. The full effects of the peel, including improved texture, tone, and reduction in imperfections, will become increasingly evident as the skin fully heals.

Frequently asked questions

What can I expect for the treatment process?

The chemical peel process begins with the cleansing of the skin, followed by the application of one or more chemical solutions, such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or phenol. These chemicals create a controlled wound, allowing the skin to peel off and reveal regenerated skin underneath that is usually smoother and less wrinkled. The strength of the peel (light, medium, or deep) determines both the depth of the exfoliation and the length of the treatment process. After the peel, a neutralizing solution is applied to stop the action of the chemical, and then the skin is cooled. Post-treatment care is crucial to aid the healing process and includes moisturizing and sun protection.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required can vary depending on the individual's skin condition and the type of peel used. Light peels might be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks for desired results, while deeper peels can be done every 3 to 4 months. A series of treatments may be recommended for optimal results, especially for addressing specific skin issues.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

Chemical peels are suitable for individuals looking to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and sun damage. Light peels are generally safe for all skin types, whereas medium and deep peels may not be suitable for those with darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. It's important for individuals with active skin infections, certain skin diseases, or those who are pregnant to avoid chemical peels. A consultation with a skincare professional is essential to determine the most appropriate type of peel for your skin type and concerns. Preconditioning the skin for certain skin types may be required.

When will I see results, and how long will they last?

Results can be seen as soon as the skin heals, typically within 1 to 2 weeks for light peels, and longer for medium and deep peels. The improvements include smoother skin, reduced wrinkles, and diminished blemishes. Light peels offer subtle enhancements and require regular treatments for maintenance, while medium and deep peels provide more dramatic and lasting results, often lasting several months to years, depending on the depth of the peel and post-treatment care. To prolong the effects, protecting the skin from the sun and following a tailored skincare routine are crucial.
